Lakkos is the oldest neighbourhood in Heraklion and used to have a bad reputation for being unsafe. The Lakkos project aims to rejuvinate the area by allowing artists to create a mural trail- thus creating a tourist attractrion, brightening up public areas, and breathing a new artistic identity into this once avoided part of town.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe design of my mural was inspired by my visits to museums of archeology on Crete but also in Athens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI fell in love with partially broken statues where the face was still somewhat visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eNature taking over dilapidated buildings was a focus of mine during my residency and informed all of my final outcomes, so I had no shortage of images of foliage pouring over the edges of man made structures and taking over them like a jungle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eDuring my time in Heraklion, giant cranes dominated the city sky line, rising higher than the Orthodox Church domes. Speaking with locals, I learned that there was little respect for historical buildings in the city centre and often they would be left to rot beyond repair, or knocked down and built on top of.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI decided to try and reflect this constantly evolving skyline in my mural and depict a push and pull battle between man and nature, history and innovation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe thread tying all of these concepts together was the inclusion of myself in the piece, I used myself as a reference for the broken statue, and suddenly-\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003ethe busy city and all of the cascading plants were pouring out of my own head. In short, My impression of Heraklion is embodied in this mural.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eMany locals witnessed me creating the mural, and stopped to tell me it was beautiful, which was lovely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eOne man said that the inclusion of the crane really spoke to him, he was upset about a local green space being turned into a building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eSomeone else told me that the washing line with drying clothes was the most important part of the mural to them, because this symbolised the poor people of Heraklion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe inclusion of a pink lemon tree is a joke referring to the duolingo app- one of the first phrases it teaches you when you are learning greek is “to limoni enai roz”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eHeraklion, Crete, 2022.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Slava Arts","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":63734924116317,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1038\/8308\/0029\/files\/727E8D8D-D219-4512-B8C3-F59BA794A8B1.jpg?v=1772791110"},{"product_id":"space-otters","title":"Space Otters","description":"\u003cp\u003eI created this mural as part of the Dundee Women's paint jam in 2022. This was a one day event organised by a local street artist to encourage female artists of different backgrounds to come together and decorate a disused wall in an area awaiting building work near the bus station. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI came up with the idea by first thinking about anti- gravity (I was part of a production of Alice in Wonderland at the time and liked the aesthetic of floating down the rabbit hole, the James Webb telescope had recently taken the most detailed images of the distant universe to date, and I knew that I had a lot of dark blue- space coloured- paint left over from decorating my kitchen).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAfter sketching a few ideas I realised I'd rather draw floating animals than people, and started looking for references of animals floating in water to get an idea for shapes.
