Space Otters
I created this mural as part of the Dundee Women's paint jam in 2022. This was a one day event organised by a local street artist to encourage female artists of different backgrounds to come together and decorate a disused wall in an area awaiting building work near the bus station.
I came up with the idea by first thinking about anti- gravity (I was part of a production of Alice in Wonderland at the time and liked the aesthetic of floating down the rabbit hole, the James Webb telescope had recently taken the most detailed images of the distant universe to date, and I knew that I had a lot of dark blue- space coloured- paint left over from decorating my kitchen).
After sketching a few ideas I realised I'd rather draw floating animals than people, and started looking for references of animals floating in water to get an idea for shapes. I quickly found images of otters swimming under water and thought about them doing the same in space as Astron-otters!
